There has been many different times were barbie was compared to a normal woman to see if he body measure would even be possible. The picture to the left shows the measures of the average women versus the measurement of what barbie would be, if she was a real person. But these standard have made many girls and women feel bad and try to strive for the body image of barbie. This made it possible for a guy to make a barbie called the "average" barbie.
This is the comparison of the of the original barbie versus the new "average" barbie. The new "average" barbie has the same measurements of the average women, while not being fat or anorexic.This barbie is a prototype of what the barbie would look like. This would help with girls who feel the impossible pressure to be more like barbie, a body type unable to be achieved without hurting yourself.
This is the real "average" barbie that is named Lammily. She promotes a healthy lifestyle and is active. She was made to make girls realize that average is beautiful and that they are great the way they are. They also plan to make this barbie in different ethnicities and different body types.
I am so happy that they are finally giving little girls dolls to play with that they actually can look like when they get older. I am also very happy that the dolls will be promoting a healthy lifestyle, as opposed to Barbie's "dieting book" in the past that simply said "Do not eat." However, I feel like they should have not started marketing them until they actually created the Barbies of different ethnicity and body type. Because they are advertising this doll first, it make it seem the most important, the original average Barbie, while those of different ethnicity and body type are more of an after thought.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of this revolutionized doll that contradicts the impossible beauty standard that has been embedded in young girl's brains with dolls like Barbie. We have known for a while that Barbie does not come close to the size of a normal human being. Her body is completely unrealistic and does not reflect normal female bodies at all. Her waist is so small that only half of her liver could fit inside it, her neck is twice the length of real necks, and her feet are so small that she would not be able to carry her extremely tall frame.
ReplyDeleteI feel that it is helpful to young girls to see this more normal doll, because they recognize that real people don't look like Barbie, they look healthy. The only "issue" that I have with this doll is not it's appearance or distribution, but it's motto. "Average is beautiful" is nice for those who fall into the "average" category, but what about those who are not part of the "average" population? Since this doll is only representing the young women who are the same height and weight, she technically does not represent ALL women, just those that have a similar body type.
All in all, I think it is a good idea, and about time that someone has designed a doll that contradicts the impossible beauty standard that Barbie has set. Perhaps in the future, we will see dolls that encompass a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
I really like this idea! I think that a positive example for young girls, like this doll, is much needed. We live in a very harsh society, so for an average doll to come out like this is really progressive. I also like that it will be featured in different ethnicities and body types. I also think it is interesting that the Lammily promotes a healthy lifestyle and is active. When I had Barbies, they were housewives and they liked to shop. It's nice to see that little girls can play with a doll that likes to be healthy, looks normal and promotes exercise and extracurricular activities.
