Even in an article by Lisa Van Houten called Attn. Kmart Shoppers, she talks about how this is seen more as porn.
Therefore, I went on Youtube and wanted to prove how ridiculous this people are considering women are treated like this everyday. What I came upon was pretty comical, entertaining, and shows the real difference that men and women deal with when it comes to advertising.
This is just an excellent portrayal of the way women are to look in advertising but of course if it is a man in the commercial it seems more ridiculous and less "sexy."
I personally LOVED when that commercial came out. I thought that it was funny and clever. It was something that I could see my brother and his friends doing when they were younger. I was actually surprised when people were outraged by it. They find it completely normal to see just barely clothed women in all different types of advertisement, clearly being sexually objectified, but when men wear what they typically do around the house, it is seen as porn.
ReplyDeleteI found this interesting and remembered back to the annual VS fashion show that both draw women as well as men. The question came up on my Twitter timeline from the females watching as to why their wasn't a Calvin Klein fashion show that this popular. The answer lies in your blog as it becomes difficult to reach the demographic of men, and women in such a market scheme as the VS fashion show can. While drawing attention of both men and women encourages buying and profit in a more efficient way. A sad marketing fact that takes advantage of promotion of the objectification of women.
ReplyDeleteI definitely love the Joe Boxer commercial and personally don't see anything wrong with it especially considering it is an underwear brand isn't it? Also this reminded me of the Kraft Italian Dressing ads that are on TV and in magazines with "The Zesty Guy" who always ends up shirtless. When I first saw those commercials I thought they were amazing and definitely intriguing considering that they're sexualizing a man instead of a woman. But it seems the ads have actually been pretty popular!
